LA TRAVIATA
OPERA BALTIMORE & OPERA DELAWARE 2023
"The production’s staging was equally skilled. In her program notes, stage director Kaley Karis Smith writes that as a woman, Violetta is “denied the agency to live her life as she would like in Parisian society,” so she must make “courageous, selfless, and passionate” choices. Karis Smith, too, makes apt and telling choices. She moves ensembles gracefully around the Grand’s not-so-large stage, her blocking assured and inventive. But she also inserted small, almost imperceptible staging touches—Alfredo caressing Violetta’s glove, or curtains that subtly billow in a fresh country breeze and then go limp as despair overtakes the heroine—that subtly amplified this tale."
BROAD STREET REVIEW
"Kaley Karis Smith brings nuanced perspective to this sumptuous, traditional staging."
MD THEATER GUIDE
"La Traviata has three acts that move from the lovers meeting, their time together and breakup, and the death bed. Stage Director Kaley Karis Smith did an excellent job telling the story with a compelling flow in those settings. Her choices added accents to the story, such as an opening scene during the overture that made the point that Violetta was passed between men and such as adding photo-taking, where the expression on Violetta’s face changed dramatically between waiting for the photo to be taken and when the picture is snapped, a hint her life might not be as gay as she professed. THE ROSE ELF
PITTSBURGH OPERA 2022
"For Pittsburgh Opera, director Kaley Karis Smith and set designer Samantha Pollack have created a garden of delight with large white blossoms suspended from the ceiling and cascades of flowers framing the action. Evocative lighting creates an air of mystery and suspense as rapture evolves into tragedy. ... Smith introduced a human embodiment of the Rose, enacted by dancer Grace Lopez. Although she never made a sound, Lopez communicated the ecstasy and horror of the doomed lovers through her face and body."
